The Carbon and Silicon Balance
With the imminent gateway we are passing through regarding an AI reality, we need to address the elements involved, in the same way the scientific method relies on a certain basic premises to quantify and observe new discoveries. Our periodic table illustrates the building blocks of our physical reality and therefore I see this as a good start to quantify this. Carbon (C) is the basis of the human component and Silicon (Si) represents the computational entity A.I.
Our understanding at present is we now see the possibilities of A.I. as it gains momentum, its acquisition of known and established data through observing and also fed in data by humans in the simple use of its capabilities. Like any powerful evolving system comes the basic truth "power is best used with careful controlled action".
The Carbon and Silicon balance is a metric to reach a synergistic outcome, as the principles of "balance" does not imply 50/50. It will be important to understand the optimal ratio and assignment of functions within existing and emerging organisations.
A clear message from business stakeholders and shareholders is the desire to find efficiency with a greater margin of profitability, and the use of A.I with its accelerating functionalities is making this possible. But at the expense of deleting the need for the existing and previous workforce, swinging the ration from Carbon to Silicon at a rapid and uncontrolled rate. This as shown in the past with rapid format changes, creates deficits of established value. More than ever do we need to consider evolution not revolution thinking.
